Waffles with Spiced Brown Sugar Syrup

Waffles

  • 1 cup self-rising flour 1 cup self-rising flour
  • ½ cup white whole wheat flour ½ cup white whole wheat flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • C&H® Granulated Sugar 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons C&H® Granulated Sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cups milk 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter 2 tablespoons melted butter

Spiced Brown Sugar Syrup

  • C&H® Dark Brown Sugar 1 1/2 cups 1 1/2 cups C&H® Dark Brown Sugar
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened apple juice or cider 2/3 cup unsweetened apple juice or cider
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

Instructions

Waffles

Step 1

Preheat waffle iron and lightly grease with oil.

Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, sift or whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.

Step 3

In a small bowl, beat egg with milk then whisk egg mixture into flour mixture. Next, whisk in melted butter until batter is smooth. Let batter sit for 5 minutes before baking.

Step 4

Ladle batter onto hot waffle iron. Cook according to waffle iron directions.

Spiced Brown Sugar Syrup

In a small saucepot over medium heat, whisk all ingredients together and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes, whisking occasionally, or until it reaches desired syrup consistency. Hold aside until ready to serve.

Chef's Tip


White whole wheat flour offers all the nutritional goodness of regular whole wheat flour.
