C&H SUGAR LAUNCHES ‘RANDOM ACTS OF SWEETNESS’

Campaign Encourages Consumers to Make their Communities Sweeter One Dessert at a Time

(Crockett, Calif.) October 22, 2004 — C&H Sugar has launched “Random Acts of Sweetness,” a new, grass-roots effort to inspire people across the country to bake homemade treats and surprise others with the unexpected gift of dessert any day of the year.

While it’s no secret that baked goods make wonderful gifts for special occasions, Random Acts of Sweetness creates a new opportunity for consumers to celebrate the people in their lives and build connections with those they’d like to know better. The concept is simple: Simply bake a delicious dessert using the highest quality ingredients such as pure cane sugar, real vanilla, and real butter, place the freshly baked goodies in an attractive gift box or bag, personalize the gift with a handwritten note or card, and surprise someone in the community anytime with a sweet treat and encourage others to do the same.

From selecting a delicious dessert recipe to seeing the surprised, joyful look on another’s face when they receive an unexpectedly sweet gift, the Random Acts of Sweetness spirit is infectious. In addition to surprising loved ones, the campaign encourages consumers to share desserts with co-workers, neighbors, or even the local postal carrier as a fun, creative way to connect with others in the community.

Word about Random Acts of Sweetness is already stirring up excitement among celebrity pastry chefs such as James Beard Award winner Emily Luchetti of San Francisco’s Farallon restaurant. “I love the Random Acts of Sweetness spirit because I’ve built my life around the belief that baking desserts is about more than simply preparing a delicious cake or a perfectly moist cookie, it’s about celebrating the people in our lives. The memories you create when you bake and share desserts are the most special gifts you can give,” says Luchetti.

Luchetti offers the following ideas to get consumers excited about spreading the sweetness:

  • Surprise your co-workers with a sweet treat at the office. They will be amazed at how smoothly the work day passes and appreciate being a part of your team each time they enjoy one of the delicious goodies.

  • Show a neighbor how much you’ve enjoyed living on the same block, or in the same apartment building, by ringing their doorbell and offering them a gooey batch of brownies. The sweet surprise creates a wonderful occasion to get to know them better.

  • Thank your postal carrier for delivering all those letters by giving them their own delicious dessert package.

  • Notice a friend having a bad day? Lift their spirits with the thoughtful gift of dessert, or surprise them anytime to show them how much you value their friendship.

  • Send a decadent surprise to your spouse or partner at work to wish them a great day. Nothing says “I love you” like a sweet delivery to the office.

  • Let your child’s teacher know you appreciate their hard work by sending delicious baked goodies to the classroom. Your homemade treats are sure to be a crowd-pleaser, whether they are shared with the class or enjoyed in the teacher’s lounge.

Consumers can order free Random Acts of Sweetness gift kits, which include a gift box, Random Acts of Sweetness stickers, and a coupon towards their next C&H Pure Cane sugar purchase, and also download gift cards and recipe cards by visiting www.chsugar.com.
